Throughout much of our time in advocating for and educating around the DREAM Act, the argument surrounding the military clause rises frequently (and might I add in a rather condescending, ignorant manner).The reality is that most of us that advocate for the immediate passage of the DREAM Act are against the militarization aspect; we recognize the role it has played in our countries of origin that have caused unpleasant conditions (to say the least) for our families to migrate in the first place, as well as the heavy recruitment that already persists in lower- income and communities of color throughout the country (regardless if DREAM passes… and Chicago, Illinois being no exception).
Nevertheless, these are not excuses to hold the DREAM hostage. Youth are intelligent and capable enough of making decisions on their own. (more…)
