For the first time in the Village of Addison undocumented residents of DuPage county will declare themselves ‘undocumented and unafraid.’ This event is part of a series of actions during March, National Coming Out of the Shadows month. The month is being led by a new collective of undocumented, immigrants calling themselves ‘Undocumented Illinois,’ and will focus on the issue of deportations.
Addison IL — On March 16th, 2013, nine undocumented residents of DuPage county will share their stories of facing deportation, being ineligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program,, and those with families living in detention.
With the recent announcement that there is a new record number of deportations, over 409,000 in fiscal year 2012, and 1.4 million under Obama’s presidency. DuPage county holds the highest record of deportations in Illinois. The group joins others from states including, New York, California, Texas, Colorado, and Philadelphia, working to highlight cases of people in deportation, as part of an on-going strategy to fight deportations case-by-case through aggressive, public, campaigns.
The group has called for a large rally, on March 16th, 2012 against deportations, with the theme “Out of the Shadows into the Streets” emphasizing that organizing will not be inhibited by deportations, enforcement programs, or programs that grant relief, such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
This event is a collaboration amongst members of the new collective, Undocumented Illinois, working together as undocumented-led organizations from all over the state standing with all immigrants defending our rights at a local, state, and federal levels. The organization heading the efforts for this rally is L@YAL DuPage, an organization that seeks to empower youth to engage in critical thinking, community building, and collaboration by raising awareness and promoting activism.
