This week in Chicago and around the nation DREAM Act advocates have made thousands of calls, held over-night vigils, and organized in order to urge their senators to vote in favor of the DREAM Act as an amendment to the Department of Defense Bill. On Tuesday September 21 the Senate will vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on moving forward with discussion of the Defense Authorization Bill.
If they vote YES, there will be another vote on Thursday or Friday on whether to include the DREAM Act & the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell as amendments. But we would also need to continue to ask our legislators to then vote for the DREAM Act as an amendment (we still need 60 v0tes for that to happen).
If they say NO, we have to continue finding ways to pass the DREAM Act before the next congress. Join us on Wednesday for a rally in response to that vote. We have to let our legislators know that they can’t play with our lives and respond accordingly.
“I too am America” DREAM Act Rally
Wednesday September 22nd, @ 3:00 PM
Roosevelt University, Congress Lounge (430 S. Michigan Ave.)
On Wednesday September 22nd, join undocumented students, university administrators, clergymen and military personnel to say that politicians should not play with the future of immigrant youth, and we should pass the DREAM Act.
65,000 DREAM eligible students gradate from high school each year. 65,000 compounded over ten years of waiting is not just a number. DREAM Act would give students who were brought to the country by their parents before the age of fifteen, have lived in the country for at least five years, and are currently undocumented, a path to legal residency and eventually U.S. citizenship.
