Immigration Policy Recommendations for the End of the World

  1. Stop using the words ‘alien’ or ‘criminal alien’ to refer to undocumented immigrants in official government communications and the mass media. In case of invasions from outer space this measure will prevent mass confusion.
  2. When picking who will get to live in the deep caves/survivor domes, do not use the social security database to randomly select survivors. Understand that many people who are valuable for the future may be undocumented and not have this number.
  3. Start having good policies towards southern neighboring countries. In case that the northern hemisphere freezes over suddenly, you may want them on your side to let your citizens across the border. [Policy recommendation for southern countries: Not everyone who is coming from the US is a citizen. Undocumented immigrants living in the US would benefit from open border policies in case of mass evacuation from the north.]
  4. If the government makes a decision to exchange select children from the general population to sacrifice to the alien invaders, do not single out undocumented children or children with undocumented parents as expendable.
  5. When attempting to keep families together during relocation, recognize mixed status families, marriages outside of the US, and same sex partnerships.
  6. Do not use undocumented workers to clean up  the toxic environment after the war/end-of-the-world mess. We are not collateral damage. Also, do not use prison labor in replacement.
  7. Consider people in detention centers for evacuation. Given the current immigration policies, many of the immigrants in detention centers do not have criminal records. Also, consider people in prisons for evacuations. Given the state of the criminal justice system, many people in jail are not a threat to society (now or in the future).
  8. In case of Apocalypse remember ye God will judge you as you have judged and treated others, including undocumented people. We recommend you adjust your policies toward undocumented immigrants accordingly.
  9. Prosecutorial discretion should be exercised in regards to mutants and/or extraterrestrials on trial. Some of them may have joined the resistance or fled their homes due to unstable conditions. Asylum policies should be revised.
  10. Take the destruction of our current society as an opportunity to rebuild a new one. All survivors should have equal rights and access to resources regardless of whether they have identification documents or what country/planet/laboratory they come from. We are all immigrants.
Happy 2012!!!
